PARALLEL STRUCTURE
Focused and well directed thesis statements specify the subtopics of an essay. The subtopics are the angles of the topic the writer wants to focus on to develop the essay with sufficient convincing support.
Consider the following examples: the writer's purpose is to introduce the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and to explain how the foundation distributes its billions of dollars. Which thesis statement is well written?
1. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation directs generous resources to four areas: global health, education and libraries, and it helps poor people in the Pacific Northwest.
