Active Skills for Reading: Book 4 Unit 4

The Bell Witch story is about a haunting that is believed by many to have actually occurred. After reading the story on page 45 in the textbook, complete these vocabulary exercises for further practice.

I: Many words have multiple meanings:

The word haunt can be a verb or a noun, depending on its use and meaning.

A. haunt / haunting / haunted

1. a place someone likes to go to often
2. to appear often and remain as a ghost or spirit
3. to cause problems for someone over a long period of time
4. to keep remembering something
5. sad but beautiful and remaining in one's thoughts for a long time


Now read the sentences below and write the number of the definition that would explain the meaning of the word in each particular context.

1. To this day, memories of her tragic accident haunt Julie.

2. The lyrics to "In My Life" by the Beatles are haunting but lovely.

3. Barnes & Noble is John's favorite haunt. He loves to go there and browse through books while sipping a latte and munching on pastry.

4. Sarah Winchester had the Winchester mystery house built over the course of 36 years to scare away the spirits of evil men who haunted the house, seeking vengeance for their deaths by the Winchester rifle.

5. Do you believe that the Winchester Mystery House is still haunted by these spirits ?

B. The noun racket has these meanings:

1. a lot of loud noises
2. equipment for hitting a ball
3. a dishonest way to make money

Write the number of the definition that fits each sentence below.

1. Peter lost his best tennis racket right before the tournament.

2. The police are investigating a racket involving theft of luxury cars and their shipment to China for resale.

3. Mr. Le's neighbors were making such a racket that he couldn't sleep last night.

II. Some words have alternate spellings, as the verb wrack and rack.

Write the correct word that fits each sentence.

1. It has to be extremely nerve- for citizens in war-torn countries to hear the drone of bombers overhead.

2. Some parts of Africa are with economic and ethnic violence.

3. Lisa was with pain after her abdominal surgery.
