       Final Assignment: Breaking Through

In "A Note from the Author" at the end of the book, Francisco Jimenez tells us that he wrote the book "to voice the experiences of many children and young adults who confront numerous obstacles in their efforts to 'break through...and become butterflies.' How they manage to break through depends as much on their courage, hope, and God-given talents as it does on the loving, compassionate, and generous people who commit themselves to making a difference in the lives of children and young adults"  (p. 195).

Write a two-paragraph composition that demonstrates how Jimenez's own life reflects this reality. In other words, in your first paragraph, explain how he himself demonstrated courage, hope, and determination to succeed in spite of obstacles that at times seemed insurmountable. In your second paragraph, write about three important people in his life who were loving, compassionate, and generous in helping him break through difficult circumstances and make it to Santa Clara University. Explain how each of these persons was instrumental in his success.
