1. How did Francisco spend the summer after his graduation?

2. Describe Francisco's feelings on Sunday the first week of September.

3. How did his mother surprise him? How did she manage to do this?

4. Describe Francisco's relationship with Trampita now that Roberto had other responsibilities. What details show that they were especially close?

5. One adjective is used repeatedly throughout the book to describe Papá. It appears again on page 189. Write the adjective and explain why it is particularly effective.

6. What was especially difficult for Francisco right before he left Bonetti Ranch for Santa Clara. What sentence conveys the emotion he was feeling?

7. The drive north through Santa Maria was a journey through his family's past. List the landmarks and experiences he recounts and describe the thoughts and feelings he has about each.

8. "After so many years, I was still moving" (193). What is the significance of this last line? How would this move be different from all the others?
