       Together Again - Chapter 4

Spanish words in the chapter:
      Mijo - Dear (a term of endearment)
      Santo Niño de Atocha Holy Child from Atocha
      viejo - old man (a term of endearment)
      Huichol - An Indian dialect
      curandera - an uneducated woman who uses folk medicine, chanting, and magic to cure illness

Directions: Print this page and write the answers to the questions. (Or open a Word document and type your answers.) Use complete sentences except where you are asked to list information.

1. At the beginning of the chapter, what words and phrases show the brothers' anticipation of their parents' return? What did they do to prepare for this event?

2. A simile creates a mental image by making a direct comparison, using the word like. List three similes on pages 42-43 and explain why they create effective images.

3. What can you infer about the relationship between Francisco and his father? Write your inference and then write the line on page 43 that supports your inference.

4. List religious references in the chapter and explain what is meant by each one. List the page number where you found the reference.

Example: "Like St. Joseph, Mamá said. "I'd like that." (p. 44)
The mother wants Roberto to emulate  imitate his life  St. Joseph, the father of Jesus, who was a carpenter. (Additional references should include Roberto, Francisco, Papá, and Mamá.)

5. On page 45, Papa says that they "had some ups and downs" in Mexico. What does this idiom mean?

6. Highlight or underline the lines in the text that support the following inferences. Write down the page number where you found your support.

        Roberto was uncomfortable when attention was focused on him.

       Trampita thought getting hit by a bus was nothing to worry about and felt uncomfortable and slightly embarrassed when Papá was talking about it.

       Papá believed he had been possessed by an evil spirit.

       Francisco doubts  doesn't really believe them Roberto's beliefs

       Mamá did not want Francisco and Roberto to argue about the devil.
