    Afterword

Summary
Write a summary of the Afterword, written by Lucas Guttentag, Director of the Immigrants' Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Begin your summary with the line, "In the novel, Lupita Mañana by Patricia Beatty, the Afterword written by Lucas Guttentag discusses complex American attitudes toward immigration and the factors that motivate people to immigrate to the United States."

Note how the opening line gives attribution both to the novel and the writers of the novel and the Afterword. It also demonstrates paraphrasing. The words are not copied directly from the text. As you write, keep paraphrasing and length in mind. Your summary should be no more than one-third the length of the original.

Include in your summary the information about "push" factors and "pull" factors, the 1986 legislation [both what it allowed and how it was punitive] and information about political asylum and how it relates to present-day immigration.

Personal Response
Once you have completed your summary, write a personal response to the Afterword. In your response identify any push factors and pull factors that influenced your and/or your family's decision to emigrate from your country and to come to the United States. Do you feel that your interactions with citizens of this country and your experiences here have reflected our society's commitment to justice and equality for all? Explain your answer to this question with specific examples.
