Recommended Lab Practice for ESL 313 Students ESL 194 for ESL 313 is a lab course designed to provide individual practice and extra reading to help you excel in Introduction to College Reading. INTERACTIVE SOFTWARE ♦ Focus on Grammar 4 (The Reading section of chapters) Directions for using the software: When you open FOG 4, first time users open "click here" to set your user ID and password. In the program, click the (+) sign by the chapters. Scroll down to the Reading section and do the reading and the practice exercises based on the reading. Select those chapters that cover grammar points you don't know well. The reading passage will use the grammar in context. TEXTS WITH MULTIMEDIA MATERIAL While reading and listening to a chapter, open the Oxford Genie on the desktop to look up new words. ♦ Reading Explorer 3: Units 1-6 Borrow the text and the CD-Rom. (If necessary, get help in the lab for playing the audio and video files.) • Before Reading:       ° Scan the two chapters in the unit and choose Reading 1A or Reading 1B to read and listen to.       ° Complete the "Before you Read" questions. (PLEASE DO NOT WRITE IN ANY LAB BOOK.) • Read and listen       ° Read 1A or 1B       ° Listen to the reading (Play audio file) and read along. • After Reading       ° Answer the comprehension and Vocabulary questions (on paper please).       ° Go to "Explore More" at the end of the chapter.       ° Watch the video.       ° Type the SUMMARY of the video, using the vocabulary from the box.       ° Extra challenge: Write out the answers to C. Think About It.       ° If the theme of the chapter was interesting to you, read the alternate reading passage and complete the comprehension and vocabulary exercises.       ° Follow the same directions for each of the first six units.       ° If you have questions about any part of this activity or your work, see a lab instructor. ♦ Inside Reading 2 Borrow the text with a CD-Rom in the back to master the academic word list in context. • Before Reading:       ° Scan the Table of Contents and find five Units that interest you.       ° Select Reading 1 or Reading 2 in the unit.       ° Skim the passage: Quickly read the title, the introductory paragraph, the first sentence in each paragraph and the concluding paragraph. Look at pictures and their captions. • Reading:       ° Open the Oxford Genie on the desktop to look up new words as you read.       ° Read the entire passage carefully. • After Reading:       ° On paper, answer the Reading Comprehension Questions and the Step 1 Vocabulary Activities: Word Level.       ° Play the student CD-Rom and master the vocabulary for the unit you have just read.       ° If time allows, do Step II Vocabulary Activities: Sentence Level. ♦ Circle of friends reading group:    (A lab project for independent learners who appreciate a great short story)       ° From here, you can print the story, "A Jury of Her Peers." After the first couple of paragraphs, click "On with the Story..."       ° Read the story straight through.       ° Next, study the "elements or a good short story: Constructing Plot, Exploring Point of View , Creating Character, Describing Setting, Analyzing Theme       ° Meet with your reading group five times. Each time discuss one of the five elements as it relates to "A Jury of Her Peers." Share your favorite passages, insights into characters, details of the setting, and themes that you can "extract from the characters, action, and setting that make up the story." Invite a lab instructor to join your discussion. ♦ Online Practice → Keep a reading journal of articles read online at ESL Station, 310 Series, Reading. Suggestions are below.       ° Choose two of the general areas of interest to focus on: Culture and Experience; Social and Natural Sciences and Technology; Literature; Companion Websites for Texts and Sites for Reading Practice; Print Media and Public Broadcasting Sites.       ° Select a website of interest under each of the two areas.       ° Read one article each week from each website.       ° Keep a reading journal in which you jot down the following:           • Title of the article you read and what it was about.           • Three important facts from the article.           • Why it was interesting or important to you. → Keep a vocabulary journal. Expand your vocabulary with these two highly recommended sites.       ° The Academic Word List: Complete Sublists 5 and 6.       ° SAT Vocabulary Builder Open the Oxford Genie on the desktop. Open the site and click on "Flashcards" for one of the ten lists. On the Flashcard, click "Show me List." Read the definition and type the word into the Genie to hear the pronunciation and read the dictionary entry.       ° In a vocabulary journal, keep a list of vocabulary words that are new to you. Use the word in a short phrase or sentence. Then write the definition of the word that defines its meaning within the sentence. → Check your Moodle page often, where you will find your class assignments and other links your instructor may post.
