      Recommended Lab Practice for ESL 327

ESL 194 for ESL 327
is a lab course designed to give you the practice and instructional assistance needed to excel in English Pronunciation 2. The lab programs recommended for this level and directions for using them are listed below.

INTERACTIVE SOFTWARE

English Interactive 3
Your instructor may recommend the Pronunciation sections of lessons that will support a class lesson, or you can independently work your way through the Pronunciation sections of English Interactive 3.

Understanding and Using English Grammar(UUEG)
Open the (+) sign by a lesson. (Your instructor may assign one based on grammar errors she hears in your speech.) Go to the Listening and Speaking sections of the lesson. You will be recording and listening to your own speech.

American Accent Program
Open the icons called Shortcut to Vowels, Shortcut to Consonants, and Shortcut to Intonation. Directions for using this program are available in the ESL Lab.

LAB ACTIVITIES TO IMPROVE YOUR PRONUNCIATION

Complete the 12 pronunciation activities from English Interactive (English 3.
When practicing the Listening and Speaking activities in Understanding and Using of English Grammar, get more out of your practice this way:

       Open the transcript for the lesson.
       Borrow the digital recorder and record the transcript. Directions for using it are in the Lab.
       Upload your sound file and save it to the computer desktop or your USB drive.
       Listen and compare your speech to the original.
       Email your sound file to the instructor if asked to do so.

Please Note: You may also use Audacity on the computer desktop to record, save, and send your pronunciation files. Directions are available in the ESL Lab.

GROUP PRACTICE

Take the initiative and plan for small group practice for short periods of time (15-20 minutes) with the aid of a lab instructor or instructional assistant. You may want to target specific pronunciation problems or practice a reading, a dialog, a poem, or any material you will be presenting in class or on the job.

You can find Pronunciation Practice on ESL Station under the 320 Series.

Additional Pronunciation Practice

Everyday Conversation Practice: Click a topic on the left. Click the icon under the dialogue to hear the whole dialogue. When you get to "Vocabulary Study" under "Recommendation," play each line individually. Use Audacity on the lab computer desktop (or your sound recorder at home) to record each line and compare your speech to the original.

Please Note: When working at home, please track your time on the lab time sheet. Turn your time sheet in to the Instructional Assistant each time you have completed 4 hours of practice outside of the lab.
