Chapter 7
1. On what charge was Papa arrested? What "evidence" did the interrogator have for this charge and how did Ko explain it?


2. Through the interrogation, what do we learn directly or indirectly about Ko's attitudes, thoughts, or feelings about the following:

    • Japan


    • military men on either side


    • the way he has been treated in the U.S.


    • victory by either side


Chapter 8
1. When Ko rejoined his family at Manzanar, he isolated himself, always drinking and lashing out at everyone. What was the real reason for his rage and seclusion?


2. How did his increasingly violent behavior affect his family, especially mama, Kiyo, and Jeanne?



DIRECTIONS FOR VOCABULARY JOURNAL:
For the above two chapters and the remaining chapters, keep a glossary of at least four new words per chapter. For each vocabulary entry, include the following:
     • identify the part of speech
     • give a definition that fits the context
     • write the sentence the word appears in, noting the page number
     • use the word in an original sentence.

EXAMPLES:
1. Drums - Noun ...large cylindrical containers
"What were you carrying in fifty-gallon drums ten miles from shore?" (p. 62)

The FBI suspected that these fishermen were carrying oil for Japanese submarines in these large drums.

2. Detain - Verb ..to hold in custody
After investigating his record, the Justice Department found no reason to detain him any longer. (p. 67).

Like Ko Wakatsuki, thousands of Japanese men living in the United States were detained by the FBI. without cause.
