   Rules for Doubling a Final Consonant


Pattern 1: For one-syllable words that have one short, stressed vowel and end in one consonant, double the consonant when adding verb inflections -ed or -ing and when adding suffixes -er, -est, or -en.

Practice spelling the words in the table below, adding the word endings indicated.
