  Making Inferences ~ Good readers infer meaning or draw their own conclusions based on details or clues provided by the writer. In chapter two, a reader could draw the following conclusions. Click the sentence that supports the inference stated.

1. The Torres family is a Catholic family.
         Papa had gone up into the sky and become a star.
         There will be Masses said in the church and eight more nights of the rosary.

2. Salvador is superstitious.
         Salvador knew that Ortega would never have him.
         "It wouldn't surprise me if the Ortegas bewitched Papá."

3. Salvador was humiliated.
         His face was buried in his turned-up shirt collar.
         He had a very strange, shocked expression on his face.

4. Lupita's mother had misperceptions about life in the United States.
         "You must earn your own way."
         "No one begs in the United States."

5. Lupita's mother cannot read or write; she's illiterate.
         She does not know where Indio is.
         She asked Lupita to read Aunt Consuelo's letters and to write to her aunt.
